Fabulous half term!
What a fabulous half term! We can't believe how quickly time has flown by and how hard Year 5 have worked. We kicked off the term with a themed day to celebrate our North America topic; with pancakes and milkshakes galore! We then moved on to beginning our new topic, which is based around World War Two. The children have been so interested and it is fantastic to see how many are doing their own research outside of school. We can't wait to continue this topic when we return.
We have also been looking at shape and measures in Maths. Do you know how to find the area of a composite shape? We do! We have taken part in lots of practical activities for this topic and it has been really enjoyable. Over the half term, see if you can spot different kinds of shapes and angles around your home. We bet you will be surprised at what you find.
Next half term, we will work on statistics in Maths as well as looking back at concepts that we need to develop further. In English, we will continue to read "The boy in the striped pyjamas"- be ready for an emotional ending!
The first week back is Arts week. We would be very grateful if you could donate any spare magazines or newspapers to help us in working around our topic "City Vs Nature".
Happy half term to Year 5!
We have had a fantastic half term with a focus on the Vikings- were they vicious or victorious?! Pupils have experienced a morning in the life of a Viking and completed a range of activities to discover why the Vikings were such a huge part of our lives today. Check out our Viking leaflets- they will tell you everything we need to know.
English has been jam packed - we have written descriptive pieces, summaries and persuasive letters! The children have worked incredibly hard to produce written pieces to the highest standards.
Finally, we have also completed our place value topic in Maths. Think this sounds easy? Have a look at our photos to find out how we are deepening our learning in this area.
The Year 5 teachers hope that everyone has a lovely half term and returns well rested and ready for the challenges ahead.

Introduce our Viking Topic
Wow! What a fantastic start to Year 5. We have had a very busy first couple of weeks but it is great to see everyone so enthusiastic and ready to learn. To introduce our Viking topic, we constructed Viking longboats- they were much trickier than we thought they'd be but we were very impressed with the details such as scary dragon heads to ward off invaders.
5A also set a very high standard with the first class assembly of the year- let's see how 5JB cover their topic of "inspiration" this Friday.
Have a fantastic week and don't forget to check our twitter (Year5_WLP) to see what we have been up to.
