Art Curriculum
Art allows children to explore, build on and record their own creative and imaginative ideas.
At Wheelers lane Primary School we value enjoyment and creativity, and provide an art curriculum that allows children opportunities express themselves through art.
They develop their skills and techniques in using a range of media such as drawing, painting, clay, and printmaking throughout the school. They gain an understanding of the visual elements of art such as line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, and form.
We are inspired by famous and historical artists. Exploration of their work encourages discussion and develops knowledge of different styles of art. It provides stimulus for children’s own work and encourages them to see the beauty in the world around them, inspiring them to create art that they are proud of.
The art curriculum is further enriched through the use of inspiring topics, themed weeks, and Vision Day activities.

Design & Technology

Drama
Drama Curriculum Intent At WLPS we are committed to providing a drama curriculum that enriches and inspires all children. We understand the importance of giving children the opportunity to explore and develop stories, emotions and feelings through drama, enhancing their empathy within the curriculum and community. Dramatic techniques enhance learning and are embedded throughout the curriculum, developing children’s confidence, creativity, aspirations and wellbeing. Children experience drama in a variety of situations within the school community, including school assemblies, role play and theatre visits. This prepares children for their future challenges and their place in modern Britain

English curriculum intent ‘A reader has the chance to live a thousand lives…’ Oscar Wilde English at WLPS prepares our children for learning now and for their life beyond the classroom by widening their understanding of the world in which they live. It is an inter-connected body of knowledge which threads through the whole curriculum, providing a gateway to other subjects and interests, opening doors and removing barriers. Deepening their understanding of the richness of the spoken language enables children to develop their own opinions, elaborate, explain and express themselves communicating with clarity and precision. The celebration of, and passion for, our rich and varied literary heritage inspires children to read for pleasure and purpose, developing their habit into one of reading regularly and widely. Geography
Geography – Intent Statement ‘Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. For me geography is a great adventure with a purpose. History
Intent: ‘History is who we are and why we are and the way we are’ (David McCullough). At Wheelers Lane Primary School, the teaching and learning of history provides an inspirational, creative and empathetic learning experience for our children, where the past is ‘awakened’. The intent of our history curriculum is to enable our children to gain an extensive understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We inspire our children to act as historians and develop curiosity about the past and their own heritage. Maths
Maths at WLPS enhances our understanding of the world. It makes the seemingly inexplicable, explainable, as children begin their journey towards communicating in this universal language. This means they are inspired to collaborate, strive and persevere to understand the curiosities they encounter. Wheelers Lane children have a positive relationship with Maths skills and knowledge. Therefore, they embrace, reason and explain the questions they face today and those of tomorrow. Maths is integral to the enormous opportunities and progression needed in the Twenty First Century. Our curriculum provides the opportunity for all our children to fully grasp the exciting developments all around us, as well as function successfully in their daily lives.

Modern Foreign Languages
Spanish Curriculum Intent “Language is not a genetic gift, it is a social gift. Learning a new language is becoming a member of the club – the community of speakers of that language.” Frank Smith At WLPS we are passionate about providing an enriching, inspiring and aspirational curriculum which maximises the potential of all pupils, forming a central part of our school community. We believe learning a foreign language fosters children’s curiosity and broadens their perspective of the world they live in. It allows children to develop a deepened respect for their own culture and for those of others around the world. The varied learning styles we adopt enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond, both in speech and in writing. At WLPS we focus on teaching Spanish in order to provide the foundation for learning further languages at a later stage, equipping children to play a valuable part in our growing global society.

Music
Music Curriculum intent At Wheelers Lane Primary, we believe that Music is a powerful and unique form of communication that can change the way people feel, think and act. Music enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. It helps pupils understand themselves, relate to others and appreciate the world around them. Music and music-making is an essential part of every child’s education and integral to the life of our school and the wider community. Our Music curriculum is designed not only to develop children’s musical appreciation, knowledge and skills, but also to contribute to each child’s life journey by enriching and enhancing their experience and understanding of the world. The communal benefits of making music, including singing together, can contribute valuably to children’s language and social development, helping children to understand themselves and relate to others, forging important links between the home, school and the wider world. At Wheelers Lane Primary School, we promote and encourage healthy lifestyles by providing an inclusive PE curriculum that is inspirational, aspirational and enriching for all. We want our pupils to succeed and fulfil their potential both as individuals and as a collective community. We provide opportunities for children to become confident and resilient in a way which supports their physical and mental well-being. We develop opportunities for children to embed transferrable life-long skills and values such as fairness and respect as well as providing them with the chance to take part in competitive sport. We build pupil character and encourage a positive growth mind-set by providing a rich variety of activities that promote curiosity, perseverance and determination. RE
Religious Education Intent Statement At Wheeler’s Lane Primary School, we equip children with a mutual respect and understanding of the many different beliefs and cultures in Birmingham, the UK and the world. We believe that Religious Education is invaluable in an ever-changing and diverse world. The lessons we deliver offer the opportunity for the deepest values of human life to be identified, shared and discussed. As a school in Birmingham, we follow the Birmingham agreed RE syllabus. This encourages children to learn ‘from faith’ by learning ‘about religious traditions’. Our curriculum follows 24 moral and cultural dispositions aimed at cultivating and inspiring our children’s knowledge and understanding of different Faiths. These dispositions are explored using stimulating resources that encourage independent thought and reflection. A very active involvement in one’s own learning is strongly encouraged at our school

Science
